Mobility and Health – Workshops and Research Guidance Manual
![]() |
Using the networked research methodology the Mobility and Health team held 3 regional workshops in Uganda, Indonesia and Mexico during August and September 2006. The objectives of the workshops were three-folded:
1. To strengthen the research and case studies through peer assist activities and information sharing
2. To develop a common understanding of the principles of networked research. including communication and advocacy principles
3. To develop in a participatory manner a research Guidance Manual summarising the overall framework and methodology and format of the research and case studies.
For each objective the core team had developed specific sessions, exercises and tools. For example there was a case study gallery in which the researchers presented their case study in the form of a poster. Each workshop included a field visit to test some of the research questions and indicators the researchers had developed during the workshop as well as contextualise the issues around mobility and health. The peer-assist methodology was introduced whereby researchers were teamed up to help strengthen their own and peer's case studies as well as cross-fertilise each other's work. To help develop the data collection tools and questionnaires a World Cafe methodology was adopted and people rotated from table to table to encourage a very diverse brainstorming on concepts and indicators. Each workshop also had a demonstration training session to familiarise the researchers with the interactive web site.
This participatary approach enabled the methodology to be more relevant to its context, encourages ownership of the research and findings, and will stimulate debate at local and national level. Finally the researchers performed little role plays and skits to get some useful do's and don'ts tips and principles of working with communities as well as gender-sensitivity.
Overall the workshops were a big success thanks to the commitment and participation of the reseachers, core team and the facilitator, Tara Barsimantov from the International Institute of Facilitation and Consensus .

"The meeting for me was meant to share knowledge as well as to sharpen our tools for the research. I am enriched by the inputs given by the core team, facilitator and participants."

The resulting Research Guidance Manual forms the backbone of the Mobility and Health programme and includes the conceptual framework for the programme and guidelines for interview techniques, data collection, disaggregating data and gender inclusivity. Although some of it is very specific to the Mobility and Health programme, researcherrs from other sectors may still find it useful and are very welcome to adapt the concepts to suit their own context.
